Different religions look at stillborn children differently and most just ignore the situation all together. The subject of a child's death is hard for people to talk about so a lot (even religions) opt to not. I have always commended the Buddhist faith for their look on the topic w/ complete shrines that validate the loss and need for an outlet for the families.

The statue of the child is a jizobosatusu. They are protectors of the souls of stillborn children and the Buddhist equivalent of an angel. Mothers who have lost an unborn child usually dedicate an image of the deity and decorate it with baby clothes and toys. There are complete shrines for just this reason.

Think about how your are feeling right now. A lot of people's natural instinct is to think...why would you dress up a statue like your child. That is weird. No, it is part of the grief process. It is the same process as placing flowers or a favorite figurine at a Grave Site (which they don't have in Japan). There isn't a special place to go to remember you child other than your head. This gives a place and a location to see that you are not alone.katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12636494609555861610noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2141626493329275188.post-37919670613037243502010-12-02T11:32:00.002-07:002010-12-02T11:35:57.062-07:00Dec 2nd TILGoing strong on Day 2...

I love the vercitility of coffee. If I am not in the mood to be fancy, good ol' milk and coffee works for me. If I have extra time a scoop of cocoa mix, a dollop of caramel, or a splash of store bought creamer is yummy too...but it always tastes good. Sitting at home today (sick...fun), I've woken up from my morning nap and am not going to go enjoy a cup of joe. Everyone has comfort food. Some people don't like to admit what it is...it could be a sweet like chocolate or pie, it could be a salty like chips or beef jerky. Mine, well it is oriental...Fried Rice to be exact. My mom swears it is because I spent the first three years of my life eating food prepared by my mamasan in Japan. I am starting this December with a rocking cold and decided to kick it off with a huge wok full of pork fried rice. I LOVED it. The kids thought otherwise and ate leftover ziti like the good little 1/8 Italians they are. But, I am ready to get back into the swing of things here on Blogger. The kids and I have been up to (no) good. Crafting for the Holiday season has begun. On Friday, we get to decorate the house for Halloween...then Thanksgiving....the Christmas! So exciting. I love this time of year.

First craft for the fall....Crayon Leaves. I remember doing this when I was a kid in school to make 'stained glass'.

What do you do w/ old crayons? We tried recycling them but I felt cancer calling me while I was breathing those fumes. So, instead, we turned to wax paper.

Materials:
Old Towel
Paper Towels
Iron (preheated to really hot)
Crayon
Scissors
Wax Paper

1. Kids pick out fall colors from their crayon buckets
2. Kids peal the paper off the crayons (which is a big treat for my kids...they are obsessed w/ doing this and are not usually allowed too)
3. Open your scissors and shave along the top of the crayon creating little wax curls.
4. Take the shavings from two different colored crayons and sandwich them in a piece of wax paper.
5. Place the waxpaper on top of the old towel & Place the paper towel on top of the wax paper
6. Slowly move the iron around on the top of the paper towel. Peak underneath to see if the wax is melting. HEADS UP: dont let the melted wax leak out of the side of the wax paper.
7. Set wax paper aside to cool/dry. Takes about three minutes.
8. Cut out into leaf shapes (or, what ever you feel like making)

We enjoyed making different color combination for the marble look. Lucy loved helping cut out the leaves. Tommy liked being Mr. Distructo w/ the peeling of the crayons.

ps First few weeks of school have been great but I am really looking forward to fall break. Have big plans (pumpkin' patch, crafts, library, books, pj movie day!).

See other projects at:
katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12636494609555861610noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2141626493329275188.post-17875622275697223172010-08-15T20:20:00.003-06:002010-08-15T20:25:15.336-06:00Week 1 DownA crazy daisy week...but it is over. We had a very busy but wonderful week. Lucy survived her first week in school-based preschool. She did wonderfully Tuesday on...Monday was a little touch and go w/ the no napping situation. Tommy is going to Mrs. Cynthia's house like usual, so his schedule didn't change. DJ is settling into his new school. Third grade is fun but a new challenge. I don't even have words my job yet...let's see if I figure that out in the next few weeks.

We just finished getting ready for this week. We have a tradition (a whole two weeks long) of braiding Lucy's hair into Octobraids. That is right, 8 lovely little braids that when they are undone Monday morning, her hair is a fizzy as a...i dont know...freshly washed fleece blanket comes to mind.

This week includes online assessment, students starting to check books out of the library, Tommy's first school day w/ Gram on Tuesday, early softball games for DJ on Tuesday, Curriculum nigh for DJ on Wednesday, my Birthday on Wednesday, and DJ's fantasy football draft on Saturday. I hope to squeeze in a few workouts and healthy meals along with laughter and maybe a wednesday starbucks run. We'll see.katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12636494609555861610noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2141626493329275188.post-10655376301666017692010-07-28T09:38:00.002-06:002010-07-28T09:50:03.726-06:00Lucy School CareerLucy will begin her official school career this year. She's been in home day care with a teacher that treated it like preschool, but it was still home based. Lucy will be going on the adventure of learning routines with 20 other children, how to follow directions not directly given to her, less structured rest time (she still takes two hour naps here at home), and eating w/ a lot of students around her. I am very apprehensive and nervious. Mommabear wants to protect but teacher wants her to learn. It is very conflicting. I dont think Lucy understands that her school career is about to change but she will probably adapt quicker than we will.

Daddy and Lucy went out and purchased a Tinker bell backpack, lunch box, green folder and 3ring binder (i dont know why a preschooler needs a binder). She picked out extra materials like wipes and glue sticks to give to her teacher.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2141626493329275188.post-36700335502514903402010-07-23T10:33:00.001-06:002010-07-23T10:34:38.274-06:00REVAMPNow that we have one child starting school, another at daycare alone, and both parents starting new jobs, we are in the process of revamping this blog. We have settled into a nice pattern to just have it end in two weeks. We have added a new addition to our family...a huge TV. Everyone loves it and gives it hugs in the morning. Soon, we shall be adding an entertainment system to house the new joy.katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12636494609555861610noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2141626493329275188.post-26950665683233996402010-06-06T12:56:00.000-06:002010-06-13T13:07:18.628-06:00Summer Vacation: Day 3Sunday morning = Sunday brunch right?...not here. We drove around for 1/2 an hour and found one restaurant and the wait was huge. We decided to turn around and head to a BBQ place we wanted to try; Just Keep Smokin. It was alright. Their meat was very smoky. Needed less grease and more bbq sauce for my taste. After filling our bellies, we headed for Ceder Creek National Forest and went on nature trail. The kids tried the different exercises along the way. Tommy had his first injury by falling at the end of the trail as we headed back to the car. We then headed back to the cabin for a relaxing afternoon.

katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12636494609555861610noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2141626493329275188.post-6210366602535604872010-06-05T20:05:00.001-06:002010-06-13T08:35:47.871-06:00Summer Vacation: Day 2We decided to stay inside today to recoup from out drive. Our day consisted of unpacking, grocery shopping, and going on a nature walk around our cabins.

Our cabin is located at the top of a mountain. It over looks the Sierra Blanca Mountain and the lake at the Resort of the Mountain Gods. It is very beautiful. Granted, we have the go down half a flight of stairs and up another flight of stairs to get to our door (which is not fun w/ an almost 2 year old) but it is a beautiful view. The drive up to the cabin takes about 5 minutes and includes a lot of windy curves and straight up roads. There are random cabins placed along the road. One is for sale for a measly $600,000 if you are interested.

In the morning, we went down to the main house to have some breakfast and almost ran into some deer. They were just hanging out in our parking lot area. Later on in the day we spotted them again with some wild turkey friends.

After naps, the kids started getting a little rambunctious for our cabin so we went for a nature walk. There was a little trail outside our window so we fallowed it around the perimeter of all the cabins and then it swooped down into a makeshift dirt road. We collected a few pine cones for a craft later. We made walking sticks and even saw a creepy crawly caterpillar.

After we went shopping and the walk for the week, we took on making a craft: peanut butter pine cones. The kids did great with this and we hung them outside our big window. We had a nice family meal and snuggled in for the night.

<img style="cursor: pointer; There were two ways to get to Riadoso, New Mexico. We could spend 8 hrs going down through Tucson and upthrough the lower part of NM which is all dessert or we could spend 10 hrs going though Show Low and the White Mountains. We decided to take the longer trip and have green surround us. And when I say long...I mean....l.o.n.g. It ended up taking almost 11 hours with all of the stops we took and the little towns we drove through where the speed limit would drop down to 35 mph.

Our day consisted of snack eating, movie watching, mooing at cows, listening to music, dancing in our seats, fighting over the toys in the back seat, and nap taking. We began our animal watching and saw a lot of cows and horses.katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12636494609555861610noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2141626493329275188.post-24998165404190568962010-05-24T21:23:00.003-06:002010-05-30T10:53:18.700-06:00Bike Riding
Day 1 of summer vacation is behind us. I was not sure who would survive. We really need to set up some type of schedule or routine. The kids now know how to fight with each other over anything and everything. To break up the evening, we decided to go for a bike ride. Very stressful! Lucy is just not a graceful soul. We are trying to teach her how to stay close to the sidewalk and how to go around cars. She jerks those handle bars so hard to make the slightest turn that she fell once! Overall, no child lost a finger so it is not too bad. katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12636494609555861610noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2141626493329275188.post-37315401113184257842010-05-23T17:30:00.013-06:002010-05-24T13:03:15.252-06:00First Official HaircutsYesterday, both children had their first official haircuts. It was adorable. We went to Cool Cuts 4 Kids. Both were able to watch whatever movies they wanted and sit in cars while having their haircuts. Lucy chose Shrek and Tommy chose Cars. Tommy did ok. He sat in the car chair just fine. The beautician said that that was when most kids freaked out.
